Wasaga Beach Fire Chief Mike McWilliam is warning people to stay off the ice, especially when the temperature begins to rise.

"I would advise people to always stay off the ice as it is very unpredictable," said McWilliam. "In my opinion you are playing Russian roulette when you venture onto a frozen body of water. Adults need to educate children about the dangers that exist with respect to rivers and lakes in the winter season. A person that falls into the icy water, even if they were able to keep from drowning, would not survive in the cold water for too long."

McWilliam said firefighters got a group of young adults off the ice on the bay at the foot of 2nd Street on Friday.

"They were all the way out to where it turns to open water. We took a fire truck down to Beach Drive and turned on the emergency lights and siren to get their attention and waved them in. They made it in to shore without incident and were cautioned on the danger," said McWilliam.
